A pearl is a delicate gem. The skin of the pearl can easily be scratched or damaged, so advise customers that their pearls should be kept separate from the remainder of their jewellery.
Pearls can be damaged by hair spray, perfume and similar substances. We recommend that pearls are put on after hair spray, perfume and makeup have been used. Further, when removing your pearls, advise that they be given a wipe with a damp cloth, before wrapping them in a soft cloth for storage. You may want to send the customer a soft cloth with their pearls for this purpose.
The more pearls are worn the better it is for them. Years ago, a maid would wear her mistresses’ pearls when she was not wearing them in order to maintain the moisture and condition of the gem!
We advise you to store pearls in your shop rather than in your window if they are dyed, as the colour will fade in natural light.
Generally, if the pearls are worn regularly, they should be restrung once a year. For security, pearls should be strung “fully knotted”, meaning that there is a knot between each pearl, this also prevents the pearls rubbing on the row rubbing against each other and causing unnecessary damage.
